Summary

Defining exotic fibres as a starting point, then fibre history is reviewed. Development reasons and parameters are given. What makes fibres “exotic” is exposed, such as manufacturing processes, materials and dopants, structure, end termination, protective materials, dimensions, assembly, etc… Some typical examples of fibres and applications are given. Emphasis is given to commercialy available solutions.
