Abstract
Passive measurements of a sample of an Erbium-doped silica fibre were performed following the standard methods. A Photon Kinetics equipment was used for spectral attenuation, mode field-diameter and cut-off wavelength measurements and for geometrical characterisation.
Characterisation of Erbium-doped fibres is of great importance. The passive parameters measurements is a first step of the characterisation. The passive parameters of the fibre have to be considered to predict the active characteristics using theoretical models [1].
Passive parameters of a sample, 40m long, of an Erbium-doped silica fibre fabricated in Germany by “Bundespost Telekom” were measured. The fibre was supplied under the COST 241-WG3-SG1 programme. The measurements were performed at the Optical Fibre Laboratory of “Instituto Electrotecnico Português (IEP)”.
