Abstract

We tried to visualize the anterior segment of the eye with a newly developed high frequency ultrasonograph. This system consists of an imaging unit equipped with a personal computer and a scanner with a water chamber. The transducer of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF-2020, 30 MHz, 6mmø, focussed to 25 mm) is manually driven linearly in the chamber through a release wire. The focus plane is set 1mm below the aperture membrane. The scanner is held by hand on the ocular surface via methylcellulose as the coupling medium. A lateral range of 10 mm is scanned and the penetration depth is 4 mm, with a precision of 0.2 mm. Cornea, sclera, iris and ciliary body are distinguished. The configuration of the iridocorneal angle and peripheral anterior synechia are well visualized. This compact high frequency ultrasonograph is useful to observe the anterior segment of the eye especially in the out-patient glaucoma ward.
