Abstract
Oesophagitis is one of the commonest gastrointestinal disorders and is encountered by both general practitioners and hospital specialists alike. Its principal symptom is retrosternal burning pain or ‘heartburn’ which results from the reflux of gastric acid into the oesophagus causing mucosal inflammation (reflux oesophagitis). In many patients reflux will not be severe enough to cause inflammatory changes in the mucosa but will be sufficient to cause symptoms and the term ‘reflux disease’ is often used to refer to this more general condition.
