Abstract
The development of cooperation between Dutch and South African astronomers is traced from the collaboration of Kapteyn and Gill on the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung. This led to de Sitter’s “postdoctoral” period at the Cape, his friendship with Innes, and the eventual establishment of the Leiden Southern Station in Johannesburg. The influence of Dutch visitors to this station on the work of the Radcliffe Observatory, Pretoria is also discussed.
