Abstract
Current concepts of spontaneous abortion have been established by cytogenetic studies and ultrasonographic examinations. Almost all spontaneous abortions are the result of embryonic death, the major cause of embryonic death being chromosome anomalies. Because chromosome anomalies are still not amenable to treatment, the cause of chromosome anomalies must be discovered before their occurrence can be avoided. Here fertilization defects will be discussed as a cause of ovum abnormality and spontaneous abortion.
