Control of uterine activity in pregnancy

Spontaneous Abortion

Abstract

The pregnant uterus, as a viscus, behaves in a peculiar way, in that it accommodates for a considerable length of time a large foreign body in its cavity. During the greater part of gestation, myometrial contractions are infrequent and of low intensity. Possibly, the slow and very gradual distension of the muscle wall by the growing conceptus prevents up to a point the appearance of trains of contractions leading to expulsion of the latter. Much more likely, however, the quiescence of the normal pregnant uterus is achieved by an extrinsic mechanism of neuroendocrine nature.
