Abstract

The abnormality of pre-verbal communication with mother or care-taker, and the subsequent inability to establish social relationships with others, which is so characteristic of autistic children, strikes the observer as bizarre and puzzling. It is different from the asocial or antisocial behaviours of children with early conduct disorder which have also been postulated to be the consequence of disturbed early communication.
