Abstract
As long ago as 1932 Cushing noted that an excess of endogenous glucocorticoids was accompanied by osteoporosisl. Thereafter a number of studies showed that exogenous as well as endogenous glucocorticoid excess produced osteoporosis in patients with various primary disease states and in laboratory animals2,3. The precise mechanism(s) by which glucocorticoids shift the bone balance in a negative direction remains unsolved4. This bone loss preferentially involves trabecular bone, especially the spine and ribs2.
