Abstract

The Qiaben study area lies within the Altai mountain range, close to the border between Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Russia. The study area is located at the junction of three major faults, and is underlain by Palaeozoic granodiorites, gabbrodiorites and metavolcanic rocks. During 1987 and 1988, SPOT and airborne X-band SLR (Side-Looking Radar) imagery were used for gold exploration. In order to enhance fine distinctions of spectra as well as gold-bearing geological bodies, a variety of image processing techniques were used including the IHS transformation. The gold host-structure was identified using high resolution radar imagery. One hundred gold-bearing quartz veins and one gold-bearing altered fracture zone 4 km in length have been found by combining image interpretation with detailed fieldwork. Tens of tons of gold reserves have been assessed by geochemical, geophysical and geological means.
