Status of Recovery — Three Mile Island Unit 2 Reactor Head Removal

  • Chapter
Book cover Reactor Dosimetry

Abstract

On July 24, 1984 the head of the reactor pressure vessel of Three Mile Island Unit 2 was successfully removed. This major milestone comes after the successful refurbishment and load tests of the polar crane in February 1984. The polar crane was the only apparatus available to remove the 159.5-ton reactor pressure vessel head to its shielded storage stand. Prior to head removal, valuable data on the damaged reactor core was obtained using sonar and remote video techniques and also solid state track recorders. Data was also taken both before and after the head removal to assess the impact on the radiological environment. Indications are that generally dose rates in the containment have dropped.
