Abstract

In general the events which take place in the virus-infected cell can be divided into four basic stages: transcription of the virus genome, translation of the viral mRNA, genome synthesis, and assembly of progeny virus particles. Some viruses have combined the first and third of these stages as their single-stranded RNA genomes act as mRNA (picornaviruses, togaviruses, RNA phages), and a few plant viruses have virtually dispensed with the last stage as infections under natural conditions appear to be transmitted by naked nucleic acid molecules.
