Magnetic Recording History and Early Recorders

Abstract

The year 1898 was ending. Valdemar Poulsen, a research engineer of the Copenhagen Telephone Company in Denmark had just applied for patents on a new invention—a device that could record the human voice on a steel wire. He could listen to the wire as many times as he liked, or wipe it off at any time and put on a new record. Most remarkable of all, the wire was never used up. Poulsen did not change it physically in any way—it could be played and replayed, recorded, erased, and rerecorded millions of times.
