Abstract

Game theory models competitive situations and has applications in management science, military tactics and economic theory. In this chapter the discussion will be confined to two-person zero-sum games. These are games between two players, which result in one player paying the other a predetermined amount, called the payoff. The underlying assumption of the theory is that both players try to win, and this rules out any cooperation between the players. We use the following simple card game to illustrate the concepts of the theory.
