Abstract
Animal studies indicated that if indomethacin treatment were combined with sodium salicylate the gastrointestinal side effects were very markedly diminished. The antagonism of ulceration of stomach and intestines could be optimalized using a certain indomethacin-sodium salicylate ratio. In human studies, gastrointestinal blood loss provoked by indomethacin was significantly reduced by concomitant dosage of sodium salicylate, show by 51Cr-labelled erythrocytes. In rheumatic patients the anti-inflammatory action of the combination was demonstrated, and the incidence of side effects was diminished.
