Abstract
Certain populations of macrophages secrete neutral proteases such as plasminogen activator, elastase and collagenase. These enzymes, by contrast to lysozyme, are produced by macrophages only after induction (inflammation, endocytosis or immunological signal) and resident peritoneal macrophages show very little activity1. For plasminogen activator, the highest secretion rate has been observed in macrophages collected after injection of a nonspecific irritant like thiogly collate broth2. However, all the substances used to obtain macrophage-rich exudates do not bring about a plasminogen activator production (after injection of fetal calf serum, mineral oil or endotoxin, the fibrinolytic activity of the macrophages is limited)3.
