Abstract
Presentation Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating when no apparent cause is found, i.e. the usual stimuli of a hot climate, exercise and emotional stress are absent, and is sometimes referred to as essential hyperhidrosis. Essential hyperhidrosis may take two forms, the generalized but rare form, and a more common, localized one limited to one or more of the emotional sweat areas, the palms, soles and axillae (Figure 21.1). It is even doubtful whether essential generalized hyperhidrosis occurs at all, as a pathological cause is frequently found on investigation.
