Abstract
The disorder may occur at any age but is most common in children and early adult life. The sexes are equally affected. The typical lesion is an annular, raised lesion with normal overlying epidermis, so the surface is smooth (Figure 18.1). The colour of the lesion varies; it may be white, red or violaceous. The size varies from approximately 1 cm to 10 cm. The lesions may be multiple or solitary. Occasionally the lesions present as small papules or nodules. The size of this type of lesion is usually less than 1 cm. Very occasionally granuloma annulare may present as a plaque up to 10 cm in diameter. The commonest sites to be involved are the backs of the hands, backs and sides of the fingers, the extensor surfaces of limbs, particularly over the body prominences (Figure 18.2).
