Regulation of Gastric Antral Slow Wave Frequency by Prostaglandins

Abstract

Metabolism of arachidonate results in the production of several prostaglandin (PGs) by gastric muscles (1–6). The physiological role of PGs in regulating electrical and mechanical behavior is not fully understood. In antral circular muscle, PGs decrease the force of contractions by decreasing maximum depolarization of the slow wave (7). Preliminary observations have suggested that endogenous PGs also regulate slow wave frequency (7). Experiments were conducted to examine the regulatory role of PCs in canine antral muscles. Data relating the motility effects of PGs to a case of human gastric psuedo-obstruction is included.
