Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism resulting from a true lack or insufficient action of circulating insulin which results in hyperglycaemia. The condition arises from malfunction of the ²-cells in the islets of the pancreas, or a defect in the action of insulin. We recognize two main types of diabetes:
-
(1)
insulin dependent diabetes (IDD), Type I diabetes,
-
(2)
non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDD), Type II diabetes.
