Abstract
Scabies is a contagious infestation of the skin by an insect, or mite, called Sarcoptes scabei var. hominis. The female mite (acarus) burrows into the keratin layer of the epidermis to lay her eggs, which, on hatching, produce an intensely irritating eruption, usually worse at night.
