Erythema Multiforme

  • Chapter
Dermatology

Abstract

Erythema multiforme is probably an immunological disorder, the end-result being a vasculitis in the skin and mucous membranes. Fifty per cent of cases arise spontaneously, the remainder following a variety of precipitating factors, including drugs, infections -particularly herpes simplex and mycoplasma — and pregnancy. As the name implies, the morphology of the eruption is extremely variable. The condition may occur at any age but is commoner in children and young adults.
