Abstract
Medical practitioners are valuable and expensive public commodities. A medical student who becomes a family practitioner, who prescribes, who cares and who retires will use up over £2 million ($4 million plus) of public money during his/her professional lifetime. It is as important that we do not produce too many doctors as it is important to ensure that we use those that we have to the best advantages.
