Abstract
Classical mechanics concerns itself initially with describing the motions of entities known as particles. A complete description of a particle at any instant of time is obtained by specifying three space co-ordinates together with a scalar constant termed its mass. Although it is impossible rigorously to identify any real subdivision of matter with such a concept, the motions of bodies of macroscopic size can be described very accurately by regarding them as collections of particles in the above sense.
