Abstract

It is one of the established tenets of classical cytogenetics (Newton and Darlington, 1929; see e.g. Swanson et al., 1981) that pairing during the meiotic prophase of three homologous chromosomes follows the basic pattern characteristic of pairing of two homologues when synapsis establishes bivalents: namely pairing is of two by two threads and never are all three threads paired at any point of their association. Complete belief in the universality of this principle was shaken when Comings and Okada (1971) observed by electron-microscopy (EM) that triple pairing with double, side by side, tripartite synaptonemal complexes (SC) could occur during meiotic pairing in the triploid chicken. Among mammals, the behaviour of trisomic chromosomes at first meiotic metaphase (MI), has been studied in human trisomy (Ts) 21 males (summarised by Jagiello, 1981) and there are also data on chiasma counts in trisomic men (Hultén and Lindsten, 1970) and in one cell from a female (Polani et al., 1982). In mice, the low spontaneous rate of Ts has precluded such work.
