Meiotic behavior of sex chromosomes: what is normal?

  • Chapter
Chromosomes Today

Abstract

Molecular techniques of DNA cloning and probing have recently resulted in a deluge of information about DNA sequences on the X and Y chromosomes. It is essential that this information be intergrated into the genetic and cytological information. In this paper known facts will be identified and questions raised that will focus on the areas of disparity between the cytological and molecular data and hopefully provide a direction for future research. Apparent conflicts between these two fields of study must be reconciled if we are to emerge with a clear and coherent picture of the meiotic behavior of the sex chromosomes of mammals.
