Balbiani ring genes and their induction

Abstract

The Balbiani rings (BR) of Chironomus salivary gland cells, loci for secretory proteins (Beermann, 1961; Grossbach, 1969; Rydlander et al., 1980) are known for several unique properties like the extreme development of the active locus and the exceptional size of the primary transcript and of the mRNA (Daneholt, 1972; Daneholt et al., 1977).
