Age-related aneuploidy and its aetiology — testing some of the hypotheses

  • Chapter
Chromosomes Today

Abstract

Considering that the human aneuploid conditions were first identified more than twenty years ago, it is remarkable that our understanding of the mechanisms involved remains so inadequate. Probably no other aspect of human aneuploidy has attracted more attention over the years than the aetiology, and yet the cause of Down’s syndrome still eludes us and the factors underlying the maternal age effect remain obscure.
