Molecular and ionic recognition by chemical methods

  • Chapter
Chemical Sensors

Abstract

Molecular recognition requires the ability of a molecular receptor (host) to discriminate and bind a certain substrate (guest) out of a plethora of structurally related molecules (Figure 2.1). The substrate may be a cation or anion (ionic recognition) or a neutral molecular species (covalent recognition). Successful selective receptor—substrate or host—guest complex formation results when the two species complement each other both in size and shape (geometry) and binding sites (energy). This complementarity is elegantly demonstrated by biological (biotic) systems through enzyme—substrate interactions, biosynthesis of proteins, and antigen—antibody reactions (see Chapter 1).
