Abstract

I began this work with two quotations from the First and Fourth Meditations in which Descartes purports to explain the origin and nature of error. I pointed out that the two accounts are incompatible and I suggested that the account in the Fourth Meditation is a revision of the account in the First Meditation. It is time now to ask why Descartes returns to this question only in the Fourth Meditation.
