Abstract

Reactive urethane-acrylates of specific composition have been designed and developed as thermoplastic precursor macromolecules for yielding high performance thermoset structural adhesives with bond strength retention at temperatures up to 220°C. These products are members of a range entitled ‘Xenacryl Reactive Adhesives’ (XRA) and their development was directed at meeting the following requirements in a single component system:

  1. (a)

application temperature below 120°C and preferably at 60°–100°C,

  2. (b)

    thermoplastic behaviour during application,

  3. (c)

    zero volatile emission,

  4. (d)

non-hazardous during handling, storage and application,

  5. (e)

stability towards moisture and under storage,

  6. (f)

    control over melt viscosity,

  7. (g)

    control over rate of solidification,

  8. (h)

control over rate and extent of cross-link formation during post curing, (i) choice of cross-linking conditions.
