Abstract

The aim of this paper is to make a concrete proposal for bridging the gap between theory and practice in mathematics education and for establishing a systemic relationship between researchers and teachers as well as to explain the background and the implications of this proposal.

The paper was prepared during a sabbatical leave at the University College Chichester/UK. The author is indebted to Afzal Ahmed, Brian Griffiths, Honor Williams and Heinz Steinbring for critical comments. The author also would like to express his gratitude to Jerry P. Becker who was one of the very first Western mathematics educators to recognise the impact of research conducted by Asian mathematics educators. Since the seventies Jerry Becker has been providing first hand information about the Japanese approach to mathematics education which has greatly influenced the author’s research.
