Abstract
In the majority of the past Century, East Asian countries, either through being colonized by or subject to heavy influence from Western countries, have basically adopted a Western model of mathematics education, both in terms of the mathematics curriculum and in teacher training. In the later part of the Century, with decolonization and a growing interest in Eastern cultures in the West, these countries have begun to re-discover their cultural roots.
