Abstract

Presoaking or presowing hardening (pretreatments) of seeds with various chemical compounds is now known for more than 200 years (Duhameldu-du-Monceau, 1763). May et al (1962) had surveyed the Russian literature since details on this aspect were not available to the English-speaking scientific community. This method for increasing the drought resistance was suggested by Henckel (Henkel, Genkel) and Kolotova (1934). However, there was not much interest among scientists of other countries, although it was a new technique of obvious importance in the agriculture of semiarid areas and the findings were reported from time to time (Henckel, 1946; 1952; 1961; 1964). Henckel (1964) concluded that presowing hardening was the result of extensive physiological reorganizations induced by the dehydration process. Protoplasmic colloids showed increased hydrophilic viscosity and protoplasmic elasticity. This could be explained only if the energy level of the plant was considered which was due to the compounds containing high energy bonds.
