Abstract
From the sparse literature on the subject, the isolated facts are known that the soil water level is reflected in the photosynthetic rate (Ashton 1956, Belikov 1960, Hagan et al. 1957, Kursanov et al. 1933, Mikhaleva 1956, Shchukina 1959, Simonis 1941, Terentev 1961 and Rakovskiy 1961) or in the chlorophyll content (Buzover 1959, Hübner 1949, Onishchenko 1960) of the leaves. Changes in the relationship between the chlorophyll content and the photosynthetic rate in the ontogenesis of the leaves and plants grown in soil with different constant water levels have, however, evidently not been studied hitherto. This was, therefore, investigated in our experiments with maize grown in soil, whose water level was maintained throughout the experiment at different constant soil water levels.
