Abstract

The fact that we do not possess a detailed chronological account of Nicolay’s life is as much his own fault as it is anyone else’s. It is unfortunate that a man of his rich experience, who outlived most of his contemporaries, has left us an autobiography of no more than six written pages entitled “Mein Lebenslauf.” But in this moderation we recognize Nicolay’s modesty, a characteristic trait of his personality, which gained him the respect of those who knew him. It is not surprising that “Sustine et Abstine” was selected as the motto which emblazoned his coat of arms. — He began his own general account of himself with a repudiation of all those who become their own biographers:
