Abstract
The presence of absorption lines from the spectrum of neutral helium is a defining characteristic of spectral type B. A summary of the chief properties of the Hei spectrum will be given here as an introduction to the astrophysical study of B type spectra and also for the purpose of reviewing spectroscopic notation. The lines from the spectrum of ionized helium, the Heii spectrum, appear in O type stars in addition to the Hei lines. The Heii lines are hydrogen-like and present few special points of interest.
