Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 5))

Abstract

If one were to construe the title of this paper narrowly, one could restrict our subject almost entirely to Jupiter, for this planet is the only one other than the earth about which we can make reasonably reliable estimates of trapped radiation intensities. It will be more useful, however, to take a broader view and discuss a number of topics relevant to planetary radiation belts and/or planetary magnetic fields and thus convey the flavor of the entire field at this time. We shall cover the solar system planet by planet, reserving somewhat more of the commentary for Jupiter, since we know the most about it.
