Abstract
From the point of view of their origin, the ratio between the metallic + sulphide and the oxide forms of iron in chondrites is one of the most important parameters in their composition.
To study this the author used a chemical analysis with magnetic fractionation of the sample, taking into account the degree of mutual contamination of the fractions [6]. Until recently this method could only be used to analyse meteorites where the degree to which the silicate fraction is contaminated by nickel iron was low, as determined by the ratio of nickel content in the non-magnetic and magnetic fractions. The author has proposed a refinement of this method making it possible, by simultaneous determination of the nickel and the cobalt in the fractions, to obtain more accurate data concerning the distribution of iron in chondrites. To prevent the results from being affected by possible errors in the ferrous iron content, owing to the sample chosen being unrepresentative, the atomic ratios (Femet. + Fesulph.)/Si and Feox./Si were plotted on the axes of co-ordinates of the Prior diagram.
As a result of studies of the chemical composition of more than 50 chondrites, carried out in the Committee on Meteorites of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences by the analysts M. I. Dyakonova and V. Ja. Kharitonova using this method, as well as data previously obtained by Wiik et al., it has been found that the total iron content in enstatite, bronsite and carbonaceous chondrites (Group H), and in hypersthene and amphoterite chondrites (Group L) is not constant. In Figure 3 chondrites form three branches: enstatite chondrites (two types), ordinary chondrites (bronzite, hypersthene and amphoterite), carbonaceous chondrites (three types). Each of these three branches can be distinguished by its constant ratio of siderophile and lithophile elements (leaving aside alkali metals in carbonaceous chondrites) and also by the sequential raising of the 180/160 ratio as the degree of oxidation increases.
It follows that chondrites evidently have a common source of origin, formation of the three branches being possibly the result of the differentiation of matter in the protoplanetary stage.
