Abstract

The large-scale oscillations of the atmosphere, the subject of this review, are those produced (in two very different ways) by (a) the gravitational forces of the moon and sun, and (b) the thermal action of the sun. Tide here signifies oscillations excited gravitationally or thermally; thermal tide signifies the part excited thermally.
