Abstract
One of the vexing problems is the conflict between the demands for more food and the demands for a clean environment. Modern, scientific and highly-productive agriculture requires fertilizers, principally nitrogen and phosphorus. It is very susceptible to damage by various pests. It usually requires irrigation, which often involves a transfer of water, and a return flow which carries off nutrients, chlorides, pesticides — all undesirable substances — into streams and rivers.
