Impact of Land and Sea Pollution on the Chemical Stability of the Atmosphere

  • Chapter
Global Effects of Environmental Pollution

Abstract

Gross pollution produced by modern technology and world population growth may precipitate changes in concentration of the major gases in the atmosphere which are essential for life and human welfare. The hydrosphere, in particular the ocean, is in dynamic equilibrium with the atmosphere and is largely responsible for controlling the chemical composition of the latter. The equilibrium processes are biogeochemical as well as physical in nature. An upset in the ecological balance, as typified by photosynthesis and respiration processes of marine plankton, is considered. The possible consequences to atmospheric quality reflected in change of concentration of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide are discussed, but a major disruption on a global scale is not apparent now. However, subtle changes may be taking place which may have far-reaching consequences in coming years.
