Shock Waves in the Solar Wind

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 17))

Abstract

Since the advent of in situ observations of the solar wind, a sufficient number of interplanetary shock waves has been studied to suggest some general conclusions regarding their properties. While some of these conclusions agree with inferences drawn earlier from indirect evidence, a disparity appears to exist which is of interest in relating shock associated geomagnetic activity to solar activity. The directly measured propagation speeds of interplanetary shocks imply transit times from their assumed solar origin to 1 AU which are longer than those often inferred from solar flare-SC correlation studies.
