Abstract

The first observations of solar cosmic rays were made by Lange and Forbush (1942) in February and March 1942 using sea level, shielded ion chambers with a mean threshold of some 6 GeV. There has been a steady improvement in detector techniques and an energy threshold of 600 keV is typical of many present day satellite experiments. With the higher sensitivity, and lower energy thresholds combined with the long term monitoring capability of satellite-borne particle detectors, it has become increasingly obvious that the solar production of energetic particles is not a rare, isolated occurrence but that the sun is essentially a continuous source of MeV particles. These appear to manifest themselves in four distinct types of phenomena.
