Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 19))

Abstract

Interplanetary-plasma data at 1 AU obtained with experiment S-73 on board of HEOS-A during the last week of February 1969, have been analyzed.

A well defined shock wave, travelling with a velocity of 600–700 km/sec, has been observed, most likely related with a large solar flare.

A second shock wave occurring a few days later is also recognizable.

A preliminary analysis of data within the magnetosheath is presented; the possible interaction between a solar wind discontinuity and the magnetosheath is reported.
