Plasma Measurements Across the Bow Shock and in the Magnetosheath

Abstract

The existence of a standing bow shock wave at which the incoming flow of supersonic solar wind is deflected around the geomagnetic cavity has become well established. Plasma and magnetic field properties near the bow shock and in the magneto-sheath, the region of altered flow between the shock and the nearly impenetrable boundary of the geomagnetic field (the magnetopause), have been observed by instruments on numerous satellites and space probes (see reviews by Ness, 1967, and Wolfe and Intriligator, 1969). Both the spatial configuration and the plasma flow pattern of the magnetosheath are found to be in basic agreement with hydrodynamic models of hypersonic flow around an obstacle (see the review by Spreiter and Alksne, 1969).
