The Theory of Definition

  • Evert W. Beth
Part of the Synthese Library book series (SYLI, volume 4)

It may cause some surprise that the theory of definition is presented in the last Chapter of this book and not, in accordance with a long tradition, in its first Chapter. This apparent anomaly is due to the fact that, according to contemporary conceptions, the theory of definition presupposes the methodology of deductive disciplines which, in turn, is based upon the theory of deduction. Although various methodological concepts have already been explained along with our treatment of formalized logic and arithmetic, a brief survey of the principles of methodology will not be out of place.
