Abstract

Life in a community does not raise any problems so long as the civil, the natural, and the divine laws which determine its status are concordant with each other and do not clash with the citizen’s convictions. However, as soon as one of these conditions is no longer satisfied, a difficult situation arises. In his work Civic Life (Het Burgherlick Leven; VII) Stevin aims at giving rules of conduct for such a case.
