Abstract
Air pollution is a far older problem than is sometimes recognized today. Some fifty years ago, a cartoon enjoyed wide publicity. It showed two New York City boys sitting on a fence in the country at a ‘fresh air camp’, one of them visibly sniffing at some strange odor. His companion was saying, “That’s the fresh air you smell, but you’ll get used to it.”
