Abstract
Photochemical models containing reactions between oxygen and hydrogen compounds have been used as a most efficient tool in studies of the chemical composition of the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Recent models are based upon the model presented by Bates and Nicolet (1950). Two important shortcomings of the latter — the distributions of atomic and molecular oxygen in the lower thermosphere, and water vapor above 70 km — were eliminated when vertical eddy mixing was introduced by Colegrove et al. (1965) for the pure oxygen model, and by Hesstvedt (1968) for the oxygen-hydrogen model.
